[spoiler=""A Guaranteed Way To Get A Hat - With Video Proof""]The Story So Far
Ever since Valve introduced the random drop system, the drop rate of hats has been abysmally low. For people like me who really wanted a hat, it seemed unfair that Valve didn't put in any way of getting them at all other than just being lucky enough for one to show up randomly. This frustration was made all the greater on August 13th's update, where 18 new hats were added with still no way to get them but hope for the best. Or so it seemed.
My name is Vinnie "Vino" Malone of the Olive Garden clan, and I have found a guaranteed way to instantly get a random hat in TF2. All you need are some extra items and an internet connection (this won't work on a lan or pirated copy of the game, for reasons I'll explain later).
How I Found This Out
On the update, Valve quietly added a feature to delete multiple items simultaneously. I wondered why they would bother, since deleting items one by one is pretty fast and it's not like items drop so frequently that your inventory is constantly filling up. So I tinkered with it, checked out the changes to the gcf files, and I stumbled upon this method of getting a random hat.
The Process
First, make ABSOLUTELY SURE you are signed into Steam Friends. This is why you have to be online, and why only legit copies of the game will work. You have to be logged in to query the TF2 server for items. Please triple-check this because if you're not signed into Friends you will have to start all over and you can only do this a few times since you delete your items to make it work. Now, open up TF2 and click on "loadout", and then your backpack.
Next, single-click on ten unique items. Unique meaning they have to be different. For example, you can't have three Flareguns and five Axtinguishers and two Ubersaws. You have to have like one Ubersaw, one Kritzkrieg, one Dead Ringer, and so on. Ten different items. In my experience, item level doesn't matter here, but I am still doing further testing.
Now, delete all ten simultaneously. The game will confirm it, and they'll be deleted. Make sure you do this step right as there is no way to get them back. If you messed up here by only selecting nine or deleting two Nataschas you have just wasted a whole bunch of items.
Leave the loadout screen.
Okay, now we're back to the TF2 main screen. Click on "find server" and choose any server at all. I'm personally a fan of Version 2 (the best pub server around!), but they all work. Join the server.
Once you're in, pick a team (doesn't matter which) and die. Drowning yourself, falling damage, stickybombs/rockets, any way is good. Once you die, a random hat will be added to your inventory.
FAQ
Why does this work?
I'm not entirely sure. I've talked to a few friends of mine and they're divided on whether this is a bug or an intentional inclusion by Valve on the new patch to make sure that everyone can get at least one hat, while still making sure they're rare (after all, it takes a long time to get 10 items!). If it is a bug, we can expect to see it patched soon (though not too soon - this is Valve we're talking about, here!!) If not, expect to see more people wearing hats over the next few coming weeks as this trick gets spread through the internet.
How many times can you do this?
I've never had this fail to work (except once when I was first testing it and used two of the same item. Doh!) so as long as you still have 10 unique items you can keep doing it.
Is there any way to influence which hat you get?
Not that I can tell. Some people who've tried this say that if you use 3 unique unlocks from the same class you'll be more likely to get a hat for that class. I need more data to finalize this, so please comment below with what you deleted and what you got so I can do some number crunching!
Shoutouts
I'd like to give a shoutout to my fellow testers and Olive Garden clan members, Spinaci, Grissini, and Al Forno. Also big ups to Strawmann, Barret80, and everyone at the pro clan Version 2 for having a hell of a server. Thanks for watching my thread, and "Hats off" to you! OG Rep!
TL;DR
Go back and read that post, I worked hard on it.
